Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The position of Laboratory Technologist for the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) is one of moderate responsibility for CORE and for CLIA “high complex”. The Laboratory Technologist is responsible to and works under the direction of the Center’s Laboratory Technical Supervisor and Director of Laboratory Services. He/She is responsible for performing laboratory testing (serology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, point-of-care and molecular NAT testing on donor, proficiency, environmental, employee, and reference lab samples) as delineated in the CORE Operations Manual. Responsible for placing kidneys on a Pulsatile Perfusion Pump, understanding sterile technique, renal anatomy, monitoring perfusion temperature and flow rate, and UNOS labeling/packaging and local delivery of kidneys for distribution. He/She is also responsible to cut frozen section biopsies at CORE and upload the biopsy slides for pathologist viewing.

This position will work exclusively overnights at CORE.

He/She is responsible for adhering to CORE’s safety standards for fire, chemical hygiene, general laboratory safety and injury prevention. He/She is responsible for participation in a work environment which is free from every form of discrimination and for the promotion of a positive workplace which promotes and assures the success of the overall operations of CORE.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test examinations

Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or director.

Document all corrective actions taken when the test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications

Pulsatile Preservation of kidneys, understanding renal anatomy, maintaining all worksheets and reporting renal temperature and flow rate information as appropriate to CORE personnel and recipient hospital personnel.

Appropriately cut and label different biopsies specimens. Stain, cover slip, and upload the biopsy slides for the pathologist to perform their review of the specimen.

Other job-related functions assigned by the Supervisor, Director, AOC, President/CEO.

Job Qualifications


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

The incumbent for the position of Laboratory Technologist must possess a current license as a laboratory technologist issued by the State of Pennsylvania and have earned a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from an accredited university or;

Have successfully completed 3 years of academic study (minimum of 90 semester hours or equivalent) in an accredited college or university, which met specific requirements for entrance into a school of Medical Technology accredited by an accrediting agency approved by the Secretary, and has successfully completed a course of training of at least 12 months in such a school; or;

Have earned a bachelor’s degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and, in addition, at least 1 year of pertinent full-time laboratory experience or training, or both, in the specialty or subspecialty (serology, microbiology, immunohematology, chemistry) in which the individual performs tests; or;

Have successfully completed 3 years (90 semester hours or equivalent) in an accredited college or university with the following distribution of courses – 16 semester hours in chemistry courses that are pertinent to the medical sciences and are acceptable toward a major in the biological sciences; and 16 semester hours in biology courses that are pertinent to the medical sciences and are acceptable toward a major in the biological sciences; and 3 semester hours in mathematics; and has experience, training, or both, covering several fields of medical laboratory work of at least 1 year of such quality as to provide him or her with education and training in medical technology.

He/She must have strong communications, interpersonal skills and be able to function independently. He/She must be able to work a rotating schedule. He/She must possess the visual acuity and motor skills necessary to process minute substances. He/She must possess the physical ability to lift and carry supplies and reagents weighing 60 pounds or more.

Note: If a foreign degree must verify equivalent in United States (IERF)
